Cranbrook's Royal Canadian Legion turned to anger

CRANBROOK, B.C. -- The poker faces at Cranbrook's Royal Canadian Legion turned to anger last week when it was announced the branch had decided to fold its popular Texas Hold'em tournaments rather than face a hefty fine. The Legion recently received a heads-up from the liquor inspector informing them that their tournaments could face the ire of the B.C. Gaming commission among others.
It's official: Jennifer Tilly has completed her metamorphosis from poker-playing actress to poker player, period.

For the first time in 15 years, Jennifer Tilly was nowhere to be seen at the Academy Awards or at any of the post-show hoopla. Instead, Tilly was in Las Vegas at the NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship.

  Gavin Smith: Poker Professional

Born on September 4, 1968 in Guelph, Ontario, Gavin Smith is a professional poker player and winner of the World Poker Tour. He began to play cards when his father taught him to play cribbage and rummy. At the age of twenty-six he began to play poker with his co-workers. Then in 1996 he became a poker dealer and eventually set up his own poker club in 1998. During his life he has also worked as a taxi driver and as an employee on a golf course.

Gavin Smith first became noticed when he won the World Poker Finals tournaments in no limit Texas Hold'em in 1999 and seven card stud in 2000, both held at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. In May 2005 he won the first prize of the World Poker Tour at the Mirage Poker Showdown in Las Vegas and won over a million dollars. During this game he defeated Ted Forrest in a heads-up competition.

In October 2005 he was once again seen in the finals of the World Poker Tour in the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship and finished third this time. His third and final World Poker Tour appearance was in January 2006 when he finished fourth.

Through his three final tournaments he has won over three million dollars and continues to play online poker regularly. Currently Gavin Smith is the host of the "The Circuit" radio show which Card Player Magazine sponsors. Sirius Satellite Radio carries his show, but the largest listening audience is found on iTunes and distributed by Card Player.
