Cranbrook's Royal Canadian Legion turned to anger

CRANBROOK, B.C. -- The poker faces at Cranbrook's Royal Canadian Legion turned to anger last week when it was announced the branch had decided to fold its popular Texas Hold'em tournaments rather than face a hefty fine. The Legion recently received a heads-up from the liquor inspector informing them that their tournaments could face the ire of the B.C. Gaming commission among others.
It's official: Jennifer Tilly has completed her metamorphosis from poker-playing actress to poker player, period.

For the first time in 15 years, Jennifer Tilly was nowhere to be seen at the Academy Awards or at any of the post-show hoopla. Instead, Tilly was in Las Vegas at the NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship.

Poker Tips - Importance of Bluffing

Whether you are a professional casino player or you never played any card game for money, you know that the bluff is very important in Poker to play well. What you may not know is that bluffing is part of almost any other games. Therefore it is very important to know how to lie well during a game, or to bluff in poker terms. The ability of bluffing is becoming even more critical as a player moves up in levels. Indeed the higher the level of play, whether you are playing in money games, internet games or tournaments, the more critical the skill of bluffing becomes to a players success.

If you are not yet convinced of the critical importance of bluffing in a poker game, let me give you a precise illustration. Let’s take for example a play where any player would not be allowed to bluff. In this scenario anyone who bet will have precisely the value of hand represented by the amount of the bet. Obviously if you are the player who has a lesser hand you would fold. But if you are the player who has a very good hand you would be forced and would be willing to bet a higher amount, a raise, in order to properly to match the bet with your hand. The same mechanism would go on until the highest bet is reached. At this point, all the other players would fold to the winning bet. Therefore the one who win would always be the one who would have the best hand and the highest bet.  Actually, at the end of the game, the winning player would be expected to show his or her hand, in order to be sure that he was not bluffing or lying.

With this illustration, you can easily understand without bluffing, the game of poker would just consist of dealing out hands just to see who would get the best hands. Betting would not be very exciting too since a player would face little risk as each bet would represent only the value of the hand held and pots would only be won by the best hand. Therefore players would not require any skills and would just rely on the odds of the pot. Poker would just be boring without bluffing and not one would play it. ( Online Poker Room Rating )
